Forum: classic_tv Subject: How do I report abusive comments?

I was looking at Jack Benny clips when I came across a show that I commented on over year ago. This comment was above it:

Reviewer: monsieur rick - June 4, 2011
Subject: The "old Indian" blanket curtin [sic]
Fool, that design was the TV signature focusing pattern of the time. Shows your ignorance.

I've never encountered such a comment like this on IA before. Would I report this as abuse? How?

I got a response from IA last week:

"Thank you for your email. In the interest of maintaining an archive of digital items that represent our current culture, the Internet Archive does not curate content that is submitted by users. We understand your concerns, and appreciate that you took the time to express them. We hope that you will continue to use the other valuable items in our collections."

Well, between that and claim of 1st Amendment rights, I suppose I have no alternative but to drop this matter and allow that post to somehow "represent our current culture".

I appreciate the feedback and, while support was not what I expected, it's good to know that my Constitutional right to tell monsieur rick that I hope that his children are tortured to death in front of him, hacked up to bits and force-fed to him will always be supported by some of you. Thank you for this.

Meatpies, I agree--let's make this a fun place again.

Who? The sadists and predators of the world? Your 'speech' would, and could, be regarded as a threat. Stick that in your, 'I can do whatever the fuck I want' pipe and smoke it. Do you have kids? Any of your siblings? Well, we know that Mom and Dad do. Wonder how your father would feel being bound by razor wire watching and eating what you describe. Fool. Words have meaning.

Next time I would use all Cap Lock. That's how we know what your writing is really, super important.

Live with it. From what you've posted, although it is rude it hardly is something that needs to be deleted. A little bit of free speech should be ok on the internet even if it protects idiots.

Besides there are lots of worse comments made on this board.

First Amendment: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

To me, this states that the United States Government can not tell you to STFU.

However, this does not prohibit a private citizen from telling you that. It is as much a right for anyone to make offensive comments as it is a right to state that the comment is offensive.

We have the right to ASK for a comment to be removed if we find it offensive. It is up to IA to make the decision to remove it or not.

The First Amendment is probably the most misunderstood and abused amendment in the US Bill of Rights. People seem to think that because of the First Amendment, they can go around being verbally abusive to each other and they are protected. That is not the case at all. In fact, many states have adopted the law that make verbal threats of bodily harm illegal.

But I digress...

I think it's time that we get back to actually enjoying IA and each other... this used to be such a fun place.

And Blade Runner, calling people "idiots" is simply childish. It has nothing positive to add to anything, nor will it produce anything but negativity.

Same goes with one's health records too. I believe its illegal to "spill the beans" on somebody's health say in an internet post for example.. A few years ago in my hometown we had an incident between a now defunct media website and a local radio announcer. One day on his website the webmaster posted a "hot story" that the announcer had test positive for HIV ( the webmaster claimed that he had recieved the info from his sister who had worked at one of those 24/7 urgent care clinics ). The announcer of course sued and I believe the local police had got involved too as well as the hosting company. What a mess !!

Throughout it all the webmaster kept on and on and on saying "..I have free speech..if I want to come out publicily to say this person has HIV, bipolar disorder, or cancer I CAN !!..." Sure enough he would lose his website, his sister would lose her job and both had to pay a fine for spreading that information.

Then why bring up "freedom of speech"? Yes, I know it's a human right, not just an American right.

Ya know, it's been pointed out to this "ignorant American" that what I posted didn't make much sense. After reading over what I have written, I agree that it doesn't reflect what I really meant to say. For that, I apologize. Many of you here know of my back issues, and I have to admit, I am on vicodin today because of it.

So, to have a little fun with my own faux pas, "Just say no to pain killers and internet forums at the same time!" LOL

Your last post doesn't really make any sense. Are you assuming that no other country in the world but the USA has free speech? Meatpie you are a good representation of the Ignorant American. Please do not reply to me again.

I'm used to abuse elsewhere, but I expected better standards here.

I went ahead and sent it to info@archice.org.

I wouldn't worry about it. Most people under 35 don't know what a test pattern is because most stations are on the air 24 hours a day. The "old Indian blanket" was used back in the day when most people still had black and white tvs if they had a tv at all.
And you're right, most of the users here are polite and generally refrain from making rude, sarcastic remarks to other people's posts. So, when you run into an exception to that, just ignore it. Besides, I've seen worse directed at me. Take it with a grain of salt.

Well Guy, I'm actually under 35 man but I understand what your talking about 100%. To Torgman, just ignore it, people who make those type of comments really don't have much of a life to begin with to go trolling around on here.
